David's Wise Words of Wisdom

Our group is doing an infomercial on Build a Baby Workshop a spin-off of Build a Bear Workshop.  This commercial is going to make fun of designer babies.  Designer babies are babies that have been had their physical features picked out for them before they are born by their parents.  In our video Kacie and I are going to be the parents accept we are switching roles she is going to be the father and I am going to be the mother.  In the video we are going to tell about our build a baby experience and how it works.

The video that I have chosen to write about is “I Do Not Free Base Cocaine”. In this video there is a former cocaine addict giving his testimony. The camera is focused on him and stays there throughout the video so the viewer’s attention is focused on the former addict. The video is in black and white which makes it seem like it was made years ago. The video starts out with the man’s testimony of how bad off he was before he stopped using. As the video progresses the man starts telling about the other habits that he has kicked since he went to rehab . Eventually the man starts making excuses and special reasons why he uses the mind altering substances on occasion. By the end of the video he is admitting that he still uses cocaine frequently. Even though he still uses the substance he thanks the rehab center in Alabama Red Stone rehabilitation center for helping him straighten out his life. The message behind this video is that drug abusers are often in denial and do not admit that they have a problem until it is too late. This video is a light hearted humorous attempt at pointing out a growing problem in todays society. More and more of America’s youth are abusing illegal substances. It may not seem that serious but it is if we were to go into our high schools and take and honest survey of how many kids have done drugs or drank alcohol the numbers would be shocking. This problem is growing rapidly, we can turn on the television and see people like Lindsey Lohan and Paris Hilton who were at one time looked up to and admired ruined by drugs and alcohol. This world would be a much better place if everyone just did what the video suggests and “just say nope to dope”.

Will Disney or Plato stand the test of time? Disney will probably run its course after a few hundred years until the next big thing comes along, but Plato on the other hand has already withstood the test of a couple thousand years and will most definitely continue to be a relevant part of our culture. America was founded and built upon shared cultures and beliefs. Our founding fathers hailed from another country and brought their beliefs over to the “New World” with them. These beliefs and virtues are present in our constitution and in many other things throughout America. Greek architecture can be found on the Capitol Building—one of the most important buildings in our nation’s capital.
America is a melting cultural melting pot. There are many different ethnicities and people from different walks of life in the United States. Culture is like all things it will change over time. Over time America has become a more culturally diverse place. In every city and town people from different backgrounds and cultures can be found. The one thing that has not and will not change over time is what our country stands for and believes in. The United States of America is a free country and will remain a free Country over time. American citizens have the right to free speech, the right to assemble, the right to bear arms, the right to vote. There is no other country as great as America. These parts of our culture should be preserved so that our future generations will have the same rights that we are able to enjoy.

I tried to play a few of the other games before I played airport security.  I couldn’t figure out what I was supposed to be doing.  All of the games are pretty bad and not interesting at all.  In airport security, the objectives are to search each person as they come through security, and take certain items from them as they go through. As you play, the people come faster and faster.  As the game goes on, it gets too fast.  In addition to the people coming faster, every now and again the items you are supposed to be looking for will change.  Sometimes this happens right before you allow the person to pass through and it causes you to get it wrong. Too many passengers getting through security without being properly searched will cause the game to end. I read several reviews on this game and all of them contained comments like “this is an awful game” or “it just gets too fast.” Most of the games on our list were bad games, had awful graphics, and were pretty pointless. The games were not intended to be for entertainment which is a good thing because they were not entertaining.  These games were supposed to teach a lesson even though this one does a poor job at that too. I’m guessing this game was supposed to teach children how airport security works.  If that is the case, it might lead children to think it is acceptable to bring snakes, deer skulls, and goldfish on a plane.  I think the idea of educational video games is good. However, these games are not very good examples that will stimulate youngsters to learn. A great example of a good educational video game is the Leap Frog games for toddlers. They are so fun, and entertaining that the child will love to play while learning.

I chose concussions and how they affect athletics as my research topic.  When I used tumbler to begin my research, I found that there are a variety of different posts and blogs. There were posts making fun of concussions, warnings of how serious a concussion can be, and talk of the latest concussions in sports. One of the bloggers even spoke of a young talented athlete who suffered a concussion that led to chronic depression which eventually resulted in suicide. The blogger also spoke of other athletes suffering from depression triggered by concussions resulting from football injuries.  The blogger plans to try to get his league to enact stricter rules. When I looked up concussions on Wikipedia, it explained what a concussion is from a scientific stand point. Wikipedia says that concussions are the most common type of brain injury. The site goes on to say that a concussion is when a person momentarily loses brain function from head trauma and symptoms of a concussion should go away within three weeks.  However, repeated concussions can cause brain damage or second-impact syndrome.  This is when a person suffers a second concussion before he has recovered from the first concussion.  Second-impact syndrome is often fatal. Concussions are not correctly recorded and the number occurring each year is hard to estimate.  This is likely due to the lack of reporting these incidents.
On tumbler, the posts are very biased and depend on how the person who wrote each post views the topic. Wikipedia, on the other hand, may be more or less biased and more informative on the subject.  Nevertheless, Wikipedia is not a very credible source.  If I were required to write a research paper using only tumbler as a source, I would be in trouble.   My research would be filled with individuals’ experiences and opinionated statements.  Whereas,  if I write a research paper using only Wikipedia as a source,  my paper would be more informative but still not very reliable.

Every year thousands of athletes are affected by the high risk head injury known as the concussion.  The pathology of a concussion is an injury to the brain or spine due to jarring from an aggressive blow or fall.  Through my research I plan to examine the way that sporting officials such as coaches and referees are becoming more stringent when penalizing players for blows to the head.  I also plan to provide the sporting fan’s perspective on the increased number of penalties during games and the new less aggressive approach to sports.
I plan to implement research based on studies of athletes who have received concussions during high contact sporting events such as football or boxing.  The majority of my research will come from academic journal articles, newspapers, and interviews with the sports medicine trainers here at Clemson.
The most challenging aspect of the paper will mostly likely be finding a sports trainer who has experience dealing with the diagnoses and rehabilitation of a player who has received a concussion in the course of athletic competition.   There should be an abundance of information dealing with concussions as it has been a hot topic of late with the media and athletic officials nationwide.
